REPORT; Raptors, Scottie Barnes agree on $270 million max rookie contract

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to a a five-year contract extension that could be worth up to $270 million (U.S.) with Scottie Barnes.

In a widely expected move, Toronto will sign the 2021-22 NBA rookie of the year to the maximum allowed under league rules. The latest news was first reported by ESPN, and cannot be made official until next week.

The Star’s Doug Smith reports that Barnes will sign the extension shorty after the league’s signing moratorium is lifted July 6 and there’s expected to be a media event in Toronto before the team’s officials head to the Las Vegas summer league that starts on July 8.

Barnes is the face of the franchise after the Raptors traded away the last two key pieces to the 2019 NBA championship season by sending Pascal Siakam to Indiana and OG Anunoby to New York.

He averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists a game before his season ended prematurely with a broken finger.
