The first three weeks of the 2024 season have felt familiar for the Chicago Bears. The same mistakes and sluggish play on offense reared its ugly head again in week 3 with Chicago dropping an important road game at Indianapolis 21-16.
While Chicago had 395 total yards on offense, 363 of that came from Caleb Williams and passing game as he threw the ball 52 times on 61 dropbacks. Chicago’s offense only put up 16 points, scoring two touchdowns, committing two turnovers, missing a field goal and not being able to score in four plays inside the Colts’ four-yard line. It was another frustrating game for a team that is struggling to find its identity still.
“Missed opportunities. We had opportunities to win that game,” head coach Matt Eberflus said. “The first thing we have to do is honor the football. We have to honor the ball, that’s the most important thing in winning. Then once we do get takeaways, we have to score off those opportunities. That was the difference in the game. They scored on those opportunities. We did not.”
After Chicago missed a 56-yard field goal on their opening drive, the Colts and Bears exchanged empty possessions including each team throwing an interception. The Colts made the Bears pay for their mistake, scoring just three plays after the Williams interception when Jonathan Taylor found the end zone on a 29-yard run. That was the lone touchdown in the first half as the Bears squandered that golden opportunity on that ensuing drive deep inside Indianapolis territory.
With getting Chicago on the board with a field goal in the third quarter, the momentum felt like it was slowly shifting to Chicago due to their defense. But every time that happened, the Colts snatched it right back.
Indianapolis got a one-yard touchdown run from late in the third quarter to extend their lead to 14-3. Chicago did respond with a Williams touchdown pass to on fourth and one, keeping them alive. But in the end, more mistakes haunted the Bears with Williams getting sacked and fumbling the ball on the first play after the Bears forced a three-and-out with the chance to take the lead. Indianapolis capitalized again with a rushing touchdown to seal the deal.

Wiliams finished the day with 363 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He connected with Rome Odunze 11 times as the rookie had 112 rushing yards and that touchdown. But outside of that, there wasn’t much of a bright spot for the offense.
