NEWS;Glen Kamara explains why he left Leeds United.

A surprising move given the 59-time Finland star only joined Leeds from Rangers a year ago, Kamara leaves the club having played a key role in Daniel Farke’s side during 2023-24 and amassing 42 outings.

The 49ers have made it clear they need to sell players in order to balance the books at Elland Road, and avoid a possible points deduction when it comes to Profit & Sustainability Rules, which they now have.

Archie Gray’s move to Tottenham was key, raking in £40m. But Kamara’s move to Rennes is the club’s second most-expensive sale at £8.5m after Charlie Cresswell, Marc Roca, Diego Llorente and Kris Klaesson.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Rennes in the past and now moves to the Ligue 1 club on a four-year deal. He is not the only Leeds player Rennes want, with Crysencio Summerville a new target.

While Rennes are not in European competition, it does see Kamara leave Leeds for a club in one of the top-five leagues in Europe. They will be pushing for a place in the Conference League, or Europa League.

Speaking to Rennes website, Kamara explained his decision to join the Ligue 1 side where he has signed until 2028: “I had very good first contacts with the managers. I came here because the club has ambition.

“I know that it was built in particular thanks to the training of great players, it is a talent factory. I hope my experience will help to have the best possible season. There are plenty of assets here to succeed.”

The addition of Rothwell on loan from Bournemouth is a solid signing. It provides Daniel Farke with a midfielder that is capable of scoring goals, which Leeds lacked last term as Kamara failed to score once.

But Rothwell should only be viewed as competition to start in midfield, and not a direct replacement. There are differing reports surrounding whether Rothwell has been brought to Leeds to replace Kamara.

Nancy Froston has suggested that Rothwell is eyed as a potential replacement but such a move would annoy fans. Leeds need to go out and use the money paid for Kamara to bring in a new midfielder.
