JJ Redick surprised everyone by becoming the new head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, which means he won’t be able to continue his podcast with LeBron James. Redick looks forward to creating better content next season with James as they aim to win a championship with the Lakers. At a news conference on his 40th birthday, Redick joked about his lack of prior NBA coaching experience, but he is determined to bring his basketball knowledge, personal charm, experienced coaching staff, and innovative ideas to the team.
Redick is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with coaching the Lakers, acknowledging the high expectations of the team’s passionate fan base. He emphasized his commitment to building a championship-winning team. Despite not seeking advice from James, Redick expressed his desire to utilize James’ skills, such as his 3-point shooting ability, more effectively next season.
He mentioned having extensive conversations with Lakers star Anthony Davis, who played a more significant role in the team’s decision-making process than James. Redick’s busy schedule as head coach will prevent him from recording podcasts in the near future.
The Lakers hired Redick after UConn coach Dan Hurley declined the offer to move to the NBA. Redick, a successful shooting guard for 15 NBA seasons, retired in 2021 and began a media career. He expressed his aspiration to be an NBA head coach after interviewing for a job in Toronto and learning extensively about coaching from top coaches.
Redick’s hiring as head coach reflects the Lakers’ desire to make a different choice, following the departure of previous coach Darvin Ham. Pelinka, the general manager, emphasized the need for something unconventional to lead the team to success. Redick spoke positively about the Lakers’ current roster, expressing confidence in their potential to become a championship-caliber team.
