Writing on their website (24 June), the news outlet reported that the Ibrox club wants to add more Scottish players to their squad and they watched the 32-year-old during the end of the Championship season and Euro 2024.
McLean is a boyhood Rangers fan but has a contract at Carrow Road until 2026, and it would take a significant offer from Philippe Clement’s side to get a deal done despite his affection for the Light Blues.
Once upon a time the best Scottish talent around played for Rangers and Celtic, but in 2024 that is not the case and the only Old Firm player in the team at Euro 2024 was the Hoops captain.
The fact no Rangers players even made the squad was damning, and the club is already looking to address that hole in their squad by adding Connor Barron to the team from Aberdeen on a free transfer.
Liam Kelly is expected to follow soon from Motherwell too [Chris Jack, 25 May], but McLean would be a first-team-ready player and able to step straight into the starting lineup with no questions asked.
He also knows and loves the club which will help the connection to fans, and would add some much-needed experience to the squad after losing Ryan Jack and Jon McLaughlin from the ranks at the end of their contracts. His quality isn’t in question either, with David Wagner lauding him as “very, very high level”.
There has been interesting before and the player would jump at the chance to make the move so it’s just about finding a deal with Norwich really, making this one to keep an eye on over the coming days.
