Inter Milan are poised to enter the race for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, who is also on Bayern Munich’s radar as a potential transfer target.
The 28-year-old defender, a product of Hamburg’s youth academy, has been a stalwart for Leverkusen since joining the club in 2015. Last season, Tah played a crucial role in Xabi Alonso’s side, anchoring a defense that powered Leverkusen to a sensational undefeated domestic campaign and a surprise Bundesliga title win.
During the summer, Bayern Munich expressed strong interest in signing the German international from the very club that had dethroned them. However, negotiations fell short of a final agreement, and Tah remained with Leverkusen, potentially for his last season, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
According to a report from Tuttosport via FcInterNews, Inter Milan is now closely monitoring the situation, eager to capitalize on Tah’s impending free-agent status. The Nerazzurri have a history of securing top-tier free agents, as evidenced by their recent signings of Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski.
However, the potential move hinges on approval from Inter’s new owners, Oaktree Capital, who typically prefer to invest in younger talent, and Tah will be turning 29 in February. Moreover, Inter Milan faces stiff competition from Bayern Munich, who are expected to renew their pursuit of their long-standing target.
With an eye on strengthening their squad for next season, particularly in central defense, Inter is determined to bolster their backline, but they will need to outmaneuver Bayern Munich to secure Tah’s signature.
Their two current choices are Francesco Acerbi (36) and Stefan de Vrij (32). Both seasoned defenders are nearing the end of their contracts, leaving their futures with the club in doubt.
