Leicester City missed out on several transfer targets this summer as Steve Cooper aimed to strengthen his squad for the Premier League campaign. While big-money signings like Oliver Skipp and Bilal El Khannouss were secured, and budget moves for Jordan Ayew and Bobby De Cordova-Reid completed, the club struggled to land a striker until Deadline Day, when Odsonne Edouard arrived on loan.
One of the key targets earlier in the window was Argentine winger Matias Soule, who had impressed on loan at Frosinone, prompting interest from Leicester. However, Soule ultimately rejected a move to the Foxes, opting for a £25 million transfer to Roma instead. Explaining his decision, Soule told Corriere dello Sport: “Leicester wanted me a lot, the coach and sporting director called me to convince me of their project. But I felt the affection from [Daniele] De Rossi, Roma, and my future teammates, so I chose them.”
Unfortunately for Soule, his decision to join Roma may now seem questionable. After a poor start to the season, Roma, sitting 16th in Serie A with just three points from four games, sacked manager Daniele De Rossi, who had been a major factor in Soule’s decision to reject Leicester. The 21-year-old winger, who started Roma’s first three games but has yet to score or assist, may now find himself in an uncertain position under a new manager.
Had Soule chosen Leicester, he could have been a key player for the Foxes, who were eager to sign him. Now, with Roma’s managerial change and an uncertain future, Soule might be regretting his decision to reject a Premier League move for a club in turmoil.
