Leicester City looked to get rid of several players this summer as they underwent an overhaul in the summer transfer window.
Most notably, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall left the club, despite the best efforts of Steve Cooper in looking to keep hold of the star who played such an integral role in the Foxes’ promotion in the 2023/24 season from the Championship.
They also got rid of striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who signed for La Liga side Sevilla following the conclusion of his contract at Leicester City.
Both players have struggled for the game time needed to progress their career, with one coming under particular scrutiny after being told ‘to wait’ for his opportunity at his new club.
Iheanacho endured a mostly-successful spell at Leicester City after he joined from Manchester City in the summer of 2017, with him bagging 61 goals during 232 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes.
He was less prolific during his final season with the club in the Championship, although was still able to make a difference with five goals accumulated over 23 appearances, most of which came from off the bench.
His start at Sevilla hasn’t seen an improved showing after two appearances that saw him unable to find the back of the net.
Per Muchodeporte, Sevilla coach Xavi García Pimienta commented on his absence, where he said: “We have high hopes for him [Iheanacho].
“He is a top-class player. He has it and he has to wait for his moment. And when he has it, take advantage of it.
“He has talent and quality. After not doing pre-season… There is no doubt the team needs him. He will give his best.”
There are no doubts that former Leicester City star Iheanacho had some great moments at the club, and showed real goal scoring prowess on a consistent basis in the Premier League.
However, his final season in the Championship was an indicator that any future move for Iheanacho had to be approached cautiously as a step up to a top five league could potentially be a step too far.
It is clear that this has been the case with the Nigerian forward, and whilst there are still plenty of words of optimism for the attacker courtesy of the Sevilla boss, it will be difficult for Iheanacho to pull back and become a star in La Liga.
He struggled in the Championship, so the likelihood at this point of becoming a starter for a top La Liga side at this point rightfully seems unlikely.
