Former Bayern Munich midfielder Dietmar Hamann has claimed Harry Kane is yet to prove he is worth his £100million, accusing the forward of failing to deliver in big games.
Kane has scored 54 goals in 53 games for Bayern since joining from Tottenham in a big money move last summer.
Hamann, who also played in the Premier League with Newcastle, Liverpool, Bolton and Man City, has stated he remains ‘skeptical’ about the 31-year-old.
Kane has scored 10 goals in eight Bayern games this season, with four of them coming in a 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb, while he netted a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory at Holstein Kiel. Kane also scored against SSV Ulm, Freiburg and Werder Bremen.
But Kane was unable to find the net in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa in the Champions League, after also drawing a blank in a 1-1 draw with Bundesliga title rivals Bayer Leverkusen four days earlier.
In a column for Sky Germany published after Bayern’s loss to Villa, Hamann suggested that the jury was still out on Kane and that the England captain needed to do more against better opposition in order to prove himself as a good signing.
‘Harry Kane had a personally sobering evening in Birmingham – in addition to the defeat,’ wrote Hamann.
‘I said after the European Championship in the summer that he still has to prove that he is worth the 100 million – even though he scored over 30 goals last year.’
‘He wasn’t brought in to score a hat-trick against Darmstadt. He was brought in to score against Leverkusen and Aston Villa and to score in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
‘He hasn’t done that yet. I remain skeptical about the star striker.’
Kane scored 10 goals in 12 Champions League appearances for Bayern last season as the German giants reached the semi-finals before losing to Real Madrid.
Despite Kane ending the 2023-24 campaign with 43 goals in 44 matches across all competitions, Bayern failed to win a trophy for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Kane is still yet to win a team trophy during his senior career.
Bayern, however, have made a strong start to the domestic season and currently sit top of the Bundesliga after five rounds of fixtures.
Next up for Kane and Bayern is a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Frankfurt are currently second in the table, just one point behind Bayern.
