JUST IN; UConn Football Hits Bye Week at….

There’s no question that injured players like quarterback Nick Evers, recovering, for the second time, from a head injury, and running back Victor Rosa, who hasn’t played since finger surgery, will benefit from the time off.

But I can’t help but wonder if the momentum the Huskies could get from Saturday’s dramatic win against Temple will be lost in the 13 day break before the Huskies play again.

Saturdays unlikely come from behind win was the team’s third in a row, and it may have also invigorated a fan base that has been waiting for a reason to get serious about UConn football.

I believe, and some coaches do as well, that there is some carry over from an exhilarating win, that the feel good and confidence that comes with winning can impact the next game, and the next.

If you saw the celebration by UConn players after the goal line stand that preserved the win, you saw a joy we haven’t seen for football around here in a long time.

Coach Jim Mora, like most coaches, is an “on to the next game” kind of coach. Celebrate today, move on tomorrow.

Good philosophy for coaches and players, not so much for fans.

Fans want to celebrate today, tomorrow, next week, next month. Nothing gets a fan base more inspired than exciting wins, wins that people are still talking about days after they happen.

But the thing about fans, who aren’t involved or interested in the process of building a successful season,

they lose interest quickly.

They’re on to the next thing, like the men’s basketball exhibition opener next Monday, before football plays its next game.

Are the Huskies the victims of an untimely break during a three game winning streak?

Will the luster of UConn’s fourth win wear off before the team takes the field again October 19th against Wake Forest?

Is the bye week coming at exactly the wrong time?

Football is a rugged and grueling sport. The physical and mental toll on players and coaches can be devastating.

A few days to regroup and rehab is always welcome.

But this bye week, this season, takes the attention away from a football team on the rise,

a break a program trying to gain some national prominence can’t afford.
