As you probably already know, last Sunday Night, after the San Francisco 49ers’ 30-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, 2022 Defensive Player of the YearNick Bosa made an unexpected appearance in a post-game interview wearing and pointed to a white “MAGA” hat, the slogan of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” political campaign, after that he ran off to the locker room. Bosa has publicly supported Trump since the 2020 campaign against Joe Biden, so the endorsement itself isn’t surprising – what stands out is the platform he used to offer “free advertising” for Trump with the upcoming election this Tuesday, November 5. Every vote counts, so don’t forget to vote.
Bosa’s MAGA Moment Sparks Jersey Sales Surge
So far, the NFL hasn’t made any statements about this incident, but given the widespread praise and criticism Bosa’s act has received, I would assume they will take some action. According to Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL rulebook
During the entire period on game day when a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including during pregame warmups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying any personal message, whether written or illustrated, unless such message has been approved in advance by the league office.
Following his appearance, reports indicate that San Francisco 49ers jersey number 97, Nick Bosa’s jersey, has now become one of the top sellers, largely due to his political statement. It seems that Bosa has connected with various fans who also plan to support Donald Trump this coming Tuesday. On the athletic side, Bosa is one of the best in the league with two Super Bowl appearances in four years, an NFL DPOY (2022) and an NFL DROY (2019). As for his move, I think he seized the moment well. What intrigues me, though, is that when asked about it in the press conference, he simply replied, “I’m not going to talk about it too much, but I think it’s an important time.”
If it’s such an “important time” as he said, he should have taken the opportunity to talk more about it, but presumably General Manager John Lynch told him to stop and give no further explanation, which makes sense. Once the fine arrives-if it does-Bosa and the 49ers should put this behind them, rest and get ready during their bye week as they have a tough stretch of games coming up. The good news is that Christian McCaffrey appears to be ready to return for the next game.
The 49ers are tied with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks atop the NFC West at 4-4, so there’s little room for error. First, they visit Tampa Bay, a team that’s struggled with injuries, then host the Seahawks, who they beat in Week 6, and finish the month with an NFL classic against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, a rematch of last year’s Divisional Round game.
